Podcasts and Books

I am a huge fan of podcasts. I love, love, love a good podcasts. I’m also a huge reader. I have hundreds of books and often have at least one with me at all times. If you ask me if I’ve watched the latest movie or Netflix show, my answer will most likely be no. But if there’s a book version of what you are asking about, the answer is a lot more likely to be yes. Although, if the current “Stay at Home” order continues, I may end up using that Netflix subscription a little more.

My love of podcasts and books combined in the form of the podcast Terrible, Thanks for Asking. Nora McInerny has dealt with more than her share of loss. I originally found her from her TedTalk (in the form of a podcast, thanks Ted!). Which led me to her podcast. Which led me to her books.

Why am I telling you this?

Well, pretty much every one of her episodes is amazing. I adore her perspective on grief and loss. It’s unique and real. If you’ve ever lost someone, you’ll know what I mean when I say Nora gets it.

In the TTFA episode that aired March 17, Nora interviewed Laura McKowen about Laura’s path to sobriety. Laura wrote a book titled “We Are The Luckiest: The Surprising Magic of a Sober Life.” Near the start of her sobriety journey, Laura wrote a list of 9 things for herself

1. It is not your fault.

2. It is your responsibility.

3. It is unfair that this is your thing.

4. This is your thing.

5. This will never stop being your thing until you face it.

6. You cannot do it alone.

7. Only you can do it.

8. I love you.

9. I will never stop reminding you of these things.

I love these 9 things. I love them for recovery from what is “your thing.” As I listened to Laura discuss them on the podcast, my mind was truly blown in the best way.

I can’t wait to read Laura’s book. If her list of 9 things hit me this way, I can’t wait to see what all she has to say.

While we are living that #SocialDistancing life, check out Nora’s podcast and let’s read Laura’s book together (once it arrives…).

[Full disclosure, I haven’t read Laura McKowen’s book yet but after listening to this podcast, I immediately placed an order with my local independent bookstore, and am anxiously awaiting its arrival.]

[Second full disclosure: Not an ad! Just things I like.]
